LILY
On January 26th, Lily developed a cough. At first we thought nothing much of it (Frenchies make a lot of random noises), however, that night, the cough got progressively worse and Lily had several moments that she was panting abnormally and short of breath. The next morning we took Lily to the vet.
I thought it was going to be something simple, like a cold or a reaction to the yearly vaccine she had gotten last week. They tested her for hours and ultimately gave us the diagnosis of heartworm. Luna was also tested, and thankfully she is negative. Heartworm is a parasitic infection that is transmitted to dogs and cats via mosquitoes. All dogs and cats should be on monthly heartworm prevention prevention pills (Heartguard). Lily was taking the monthly Heartguard pill until I recently ran out and was just waiting for Lily’s annual visit to the vet in January to get a refill. Unfortunately so, that was enough time for her to actually get heartworm.
Heartguard is expensive. It can run you about $60+ just for a six month supply of 6 pills. But, you know what is more expensive? The treatment for your pet when they have been infected by a heartworm… First, there’s all the blood work and imaging to diagnose heartworm. Then, there’s a monthly treatment of antibiotic and steroid pills. Once the pills are done, Lily has to go back to the vet for her two heartworm injections and an overnight hospitalization, the worst part.
On February 25, she will return to the vet for her heartworm injections. Just the injections alone are $800. These injections are what really killed the adult worms that are living in Lily’s bloodstream. 2 injections into her spine, 24 hours apart, with an overnight hospitalization between. Once the two days are over, and if Lily is stable, she can return home with another round of medications, and this time with strict bed rest for at least a month.
This is your reminder to please give your pet the monthly Heartguard. It’s normal that we all actually forget or don’t want to pay the expensive price for the prevention. But if I could go back and just pay $60
I would change everything

Pepas Paws
Briana Butler launched Pepas Paws Gourmet Dog Treats after her dog, Pepa, was diagnosed with tumors on her spleen and lymphoma cancer. After Pepa’s diagnosis and having noticed what was going into store-bought products, Briana started baking Pepa’s dog treats with all-natural ingredients and no preservatives. Then, when she lost her job due to the Covid pandemic, she decided that she would make and sell the products to family and friends to try and cover the huge cancer treatment bills. The result is a healthy line of treats that are made with love, passion, topped with a creative twist – special custom orders can be made too.
